Mushing with Winterhawk Dogsled Adventures near Leadville

While you may never qualify for the Iditarod, you can at least get a taste of it with Winterhawk Dogsled Adventures, near Turquoise Lake in Leadville. There, you’ll bundle up with blankets in the back of a sled while an expert guide steers a team of huskies around the web of trails at Turquoise Lake, with primo views of Colorado’s two highest peaks—Mt Elbert (14,439 feet) and Mt Massive (14,429 feet)—visible from every gee! and haw! from your musher. And if your storybook time as a kid revolved around tales of Balto, you’re in luck—you might just rub paws with one of the Siberian husky’s grandpups, considering that several of the Winterhawk pack are former Iditarod competitors. ($215 per person, two people per sled). 719-486-1336, winterhawkdogsledadv.com
