Time was, you could drive to a trailhead in East Vail and find a parking place—after dawn. (#JK. Kinda.) While that still happens sometimes, you’re often better off taking a free bus to and fro. The same goes for a lot of fun things to do and places to visit in the Vail Valley: Getting there on foot or by bicycle, or in a carpool, can be part of a bigger solution. It creates a feeling of self-sufficiency and helps the planet, and if you haven’t noticed, there are a few more of us out there tromping around these days. Of course, it’s not always convenient or possible, but when it is, why not take the summer a bit slower this year, since it flies by so quickly? Here’s our walking-speed guide to getting out and about in the ski villages and around the valley without a car, in that brief window between snows that is summer in the mountains.
