A Guide to the Valley’s Ice Skating Rinks

Dorothy Hamill at Dobson Ice Arena

The valley’s most well-known golden girls might be Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin, but the other gold medal-winning athlete who calls this valley home? 1970s figure-skating superstar Dorothy Hamill. You can attempt her famed sit spin, the “Hamill Camel,” at the Beaver Creek Ice Rink (12 to 9 p.m. daily, $15 per adult, $10 per child with rentals), or head to one of the two outdoor rinks in Vail. The rink at Solaris (11 a.m.–9 p.m. daily; $20 per adult, $15 per child with rentals) has a slight club vibe thanks to Vail Brewing Company’s outdoor speakers and onlookers sipping cocktails from the patio of Bol. Most picturesque (and Facebook friendly): the oval of ice in Arrabelle Square, the crown jewel of Lionshead’s Disney-esque imagineered enchanted Bavarian Village (3 to 9 p.m., $20 per adult, $15 per child with rentals).

ALSO TRY

Vail’s indoor rink, Dobson Ice Arena, is situated between Lionshead and Vail Village, and offers private skating lessons (starting at $90 per hour, vailrec.com). But if you’d rather spectate after a long day on the hill, try attending a Yeti Hockey Game (vailyetihockey.com)—Vail’s own semi-professional team—where locals down pints of Gore Creek IPA from Vail Brewing Company while they hoot and holler at regional rivals like Breckenridge and Jackson Hole.
