The Talk of the Town

Mikaela Shiffrin wins a fifth FIS Crystal Globe in Kvitfjell, Norway on March 4, 2023.
Mikaela Shiffrin may have five crystal globes to her name, but she’s only got one damaged one. After securing her 88th World Cup victory (smashing every alpine racing record in history) during the 2022–23 season, her prize was damaged during the filming of a Land Rover ad. But, instead of fixing it, the treasure—symbolizing that even the greatest have flaws—is now on display at the Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame in Vail.
Over the past year, Michelin Guide has been on the hunt for the best restaurants in Vail, Beaver Creek, Aspen, Snowmass Denver, and Boulder. Although the Vail Valley didn’t nab any coveted stars, several local restaurants received “recommended” nods: Sweet Basil and Osaki’s in Vail, Mirabelle and Splendido in Beaver Creek, and WYLD at the Ritz-Carlton in Bachelor Gulch.

When Marchese Piero Antinori, who oversees his family’s 600-year-old Tuscan viniculture empire, wanted advice about which US restaurant should receive the exclusive right to debut Antinori Napa Valley’s flagship Proficio cabernet on its wine list, he asked Beaver Creek entrepreneur (and fine wine collector) Jonathan Rotella, for advice. “Mirabelle,” said Rotella, reminding the Marchese of the meal his pal chef Daniel Joly had once cooked for the Italian winemaker, which sealed the deal.
