Pull out your puffies; bust out your beanies – ski movie season has returned. On Thursday, Oct. 24, Teton Gravity Research (TGR) is screening “Winterland” with plenty of swag including grand prizes of trips to California and Jackson Hole. 

TGR’s cinematic kickoff to the 2019-20 ski season has everything to get you stoked for the impending turn of the lifts: Incredible lines, face shots, big air and plenty of the characters that make sending it look easy. In “Winterland,” 23 of the world’s most accomplished freeskiers and snowboarders created “some of the most thrilling and extreme footage captured by the company in its 22 years of production,” says the official release announcing the event.

But the film is more than just snow porn – though there’s plenty of that. TGR filmed athletes in seven different international locations during the making of “Winterland” including segments on the remote Lofoten Islands in Norway and deep in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska. The film also documents athletes conquering of some of the world’s most breathtaking and challenging terrain in Austria, British Columbia and Jackson Hole, WY.

Lauded as a “homecoming of sorts,” by Powder Magazine, “Winterland” recalls highlights of past films like “Swift. Silent. Deep.” while looking forward, showcasing elite athletes like Tim Durtschi, Nick McNutt, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Angel Collinson and 13-year-old rising star Kai Jones as they chase the memories of skiers and snowboarders that not so long pioneered the genre (while you're at it, raise a pint of Pete's Stash to the grandaddy of ski films, the valley’s very own Chris Anthony). 

“It’s important to the more experienced athletes to share our experiences with the younger athletes in the film, because you’re connecting with a whole new generation exposed to these places,” said Durtschi, appearing in his eighth TGR film in “Winterland.” “And it’s just fun to be in the mountains with these athletes - they inject new energy into the action and offer fresh perspectives, and hopefully that comes across in the film.”

The end result of that energy, Klaczkiewicz says, is “the best action we’re ever captured.”
